Two years ago this June, I first opened the doors of Rafael Adams Custom Furniture to the public. On the same day as my opening, my second son, Henry, was born. It was a busy day. Within a week, we learned that Henry had trisomy 21, or Down syndrome. At the time, this was devastating news for my wife and me. Neither of us knew anyone with Down syndrome. We were very anxious and worried about the future.
Two years later, I can't imagine things being any other way. Henry has opened my mind and heart to a fundamental human truth; we are all in this together. It is in this spirit that I am hosting the 2nd Annual Wooden Sword Extravaganza as a benefit for STRIVE U's job placement rogram.

STRIVE U

STRIVE U is a unique post secondary educational institution for people with developmental disabilities, such as Down syndrome. Students learn to become fully independent citizens, living in their own partments, establishing a career path, integrating fully in society. Without programs like STRIVE, young adults with developmental disabilities have very little to look forwards to beyond high school. Absent appropriate post-secondary education, many are placed in group facilities or live quietly at home, unable to work or take care of themselves. In June, tens of thousands of bright, eager young people will graduate from Maine's high schools and begin a new phase in their lives. Children will come into their own, and become young adults, bringing their parents no end of pride as they venture off to colleges and universities across the nation. Last year, STRIVE U graduated six students. That's six kids that now have an opportunity to realize their full potential. Please consider making an additional donation beyond the cost of the swords. All donations are tax deductible, and receipts are available. Let's make next year's graduating class a little bigger! I encourage you to contact Peter Brown and schedule a tour of the facilities. Learn what else you can do to help and become involved.

The Swords

The swords are made of Baltic Birch Plywood. Feel free to customize your new swords with paint or magic markers. However, even if you do nothing to them, they will last you a good while. My kids leave theirs in the garden for weeks at a time.
Please remember that these are toys, and that the point of toys is to have fun. Hitting other people is definitely NOTfun. These swords are meant to vanquish imaginary foes such as dragons, trolls and naughty knights. If you think your child is likely to mistake other people (or pets) for any of these or the infinite host of other imaginary beings, please think carefully before you buy a sword.
Special thanks to Atlantic Hardwoods for donating the materials for the swords, and to Marine Ecological Habitats for help in cutting over 500 swords.
